Students enjoy our Number Talks several times per week as we begin our math lesson. Below is a snapshot of the whiteboard after one our sessions. Students strive to find different ways to solve problems. In the example below, I wrote the equation 12 x 25 =. Students took turns explaining how they were able to successfully break numbers apart in order to gain an answer. During this part of our math class, everyone is eagerly engaged, listening to their classmates explanations.
I'm sure you've been hearing about our science classes and our recent unit on Transfer of Energy. For the culminating activity, groups of students explored different configurations of dominoes. They had to incorporate a ramp, a ball, a cup, and a pendulum. It was fascinating to see the different interpretations!
On Friday, we had an all-school assembly hosted by the fifth graders. Students were broken into groups and found spots to listen to a story read by our hosts. What a pleasant way to have our morning meeting!
In social studies, students are working on their state commercials (more on that next week) but even though we had a busy week, we were able to find a few minutes to read our self-selected books.
