Students explored the different energy transfers of a solar calculator, a heat lamp and ice chips, a battery powered toy, a fan and pinwheel, a spoon bell, and marbles. Ask your student to explain the ways that energy transfers to move or change different objects!
In social studies, students explored 4 unnamed artifacts to try to figure out what they were made of and for. They enjoyed the exploration! This year, we are buddy classes with Mrs. Gray's first grade. We met to interview and get to know our new friends. Students worked together with a battery, copper wire, a lightbulb and buzzer to create a closed circuit. Given the materials and minimal instructions, students explored how to effectively get their components to work. There was a lot of discussion and exploration and ultimately, the delighted cries of "We did it!" It was a very noisy and fun experiment! Students have been working with arrays to discover muliplication factors, prime, and composite numbers. We love our new math program! After a bit of a technology glitch, our blog is back up and running. Below, you will find the record of our early days. Enjoy! Our first task after we unloaded all of our supplies, was to create tee-shirts that reflected our likes and interests. We have hung them on our bulletin board for all to see. Below, you will see slides of our first STEM experience where students had to save Fred, a gummy worm, from his capsized ship, (plastic cup), place a gummy life preserver around him, and get him back into his righted boat. The hitch was that they could not touch Fred, the boat or life preserver with their hands- they could only use paper clips. Students worked together and successfully saved Fred! We spent some time with Mrs. Aikins class to ask questions and find out a bit about our classmates. Students were surprised to learn new and interesting facts about their friends. |
